The IMC International Maritime Conference, organised by The Royal Institution of Naval Architects, The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and Engineers Australia allows delegates to be involved in discussions concerning the latest developments in naval architecture, marine engineering and maritime technology; both in the areas of defence and commercial shipping.

The conference coincides with the prestigious Royal Australian Navy Sea Power Conference and the Indo Pacific International Maritime Exposition.

Collectively, the conference and exposition will offer a rewarding program for all those with a professional interest in maritime affairs. The conference program will be designed to allow all delegates to visit the many industry displays in the exposition itself, and to conduct informal professional discussions with exhibitors and fellow delegates.

Registration for the International Maritime Conference includes free access to the Indo Pacific 2025 exposition.

CONFERENCE TOPICS

The IMC 2025 program will explore a broad range of themes reflecting the evolving priorities and technological advancements shaping the maritime sector.

Romilly Madew AO FTSE HonFIEAust EngExec

Chief Executive Officer
Engineers Australia

BIO

Ms Madew was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Engineers Australia in 2022.

Prior to joining Engineers Australia, Ms Madew was CEO of Infrastructure Australia where she was responsible for overseeing the organisation's critical role in helping governments prioritise projects and reforms that best serve our communities.

Ms Madew served as CEO of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) for 13 years. In acknowledgment of her contribution to Australia’s sustainable building movement, Ms Madew was awarded an Order of Australia in 2019.

In her capacity as CEO of Engineers Australia, Ms Madew sits on the STEM & Health Champions of Change committee. She is currently a Member of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) Infrastructure Forum, Director of Placemaking NSW Board, Chair UNSW Institute of Industrial Decarbonisation IAC, Member Industry Skills Australia IAC, Independent Chair of the Currawong State Park Advisory Board (NSW), Member Infrastructure Net Zero Steering Committee, Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers Enabling Better Infrastructure Steering Group (UK) and Director of Minerva Network (supporting Australia’s elite sportswomen).

Ms Madew has previously been a Federal Government appointee on the Circular Economy Ministerial Advisory Group and G20 EMPOWER – Empowerment and Progression of Women's Economic Representation, Member of the Urban Policy Consultation Network, Member of the National Women in Transport CEO Advisory Group and Director of Sydney Olympic Park.

PROF SCOTT TYO

Chief Platforms Division
Department of Defence, Australia

BIO

Professor Scott Tyo is currently Chief Platforms Division in the Defence Science and Technology Group.

In this role, Scott leads over 400 scientists and engineers who, together with the broader innovation, science and technology community, develop, integrate and experiment with innovative technologies to produce solutions for both crewed and uncrewed military platforms across the air, land, maritime and space domains.

Prior to joining Defence, Scott had a 25-year career in academia as a researcher, instructor and later a senior academic leader. He was the Head of the School of Engineering for UNSW at the Australian Defence Force Academy (Canberra) from 2015 – 2021 and the Head of the Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering Department at Monash University (Melbourne) from 2022 – 2024. His BSE, MSE, and PhD degrees are all in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania (USA), and he served for seven years as an officer in the US Air Force working in the US Department of Defense (DoD) research enterprise.

Professor Tyo’s research interests are in applied electromagnetics and optics, with a special interest in applying technology to solve problems in defence and security. His research has been funded by several US DoD agencies, DSTG and NASA, among other sponsors.

Scott is a Fellow of the IEEE, SPIE, and Optica and Engineers Australia, and he was been a member of the Board of Directors of SPIE and the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. He was the recipient of the 2014 SPIE GG Stokes Award for his work in optical polarisation measurement.

Alex Walsh

Chief Nuclear & Capability Officer

Alex Walsh is a degree-qualified nuclear engineer who brings close to 40 years’ experience in the nuclear submarine and power sectors to his role: building ASC's nuclear-readiness and ensuring all ASC program teams possess the necessary capabilities.

Alex joined ASC in January 2022 as Executive Manager Engineering from Sellafield Limited, the UK government entity that manages its Sellafield nuclear site. He commenced with Sellafield as Executive Project Manager leading a complex nuclear project, before moving on to other leadership roles ahead of his most recent role, as Head of Planning Implementation.

With senior expertise in engineering, project management and managing nuclear commissioning, safety and licencing, Alex has worked in the UK, France and Australia. At BAE Systems his roles included Head of Nuclear Construction (leading the team constructing the Astute reactors) and Head of Nuclear Safety Engineering (leading nuclear authorisation and the safety case for Astute fuelling, commissioning and power range testing).

MAL WISE

Principal
Australian Maritime College (AMC)

BIO

Mal Wise is the Principal of the Australian Maritime College (AMC) and has a strong background in the Maritime Sector with 38 years of service in the Royal Australian Navy.

He commanded three Australian Warships during his service in the RAN and recently completed two years as Commander of Indo-Pacific Endeavour, Australia’s flagship, whole-of-Government international engagement activity in the Asian region.

He was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2005 for services as Executive Officer of HMAS Darwin during the second Gulf War and was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2019 in recognition of his leadership in counterterrorism and counter-narcotics operations in the Western Indian Ocean as Commander of Combined Task Force 150.

Mal is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation. He worked closely with the maritime sector, Ports Australia, and Government agencies both during the national implementation of the International Ship and Port Facilities Security (ISPS) code, and as the Navy’s Senior Nuclear Pilot.

He holds a Bachelor of Science, a Graduate Diploma in Security and Strategy (US Naval War College), a Master’s in International Relations and a Graduate Certificate in National Security Policy.

  • Transfers - Registration may be transferred to another delegate from the same organisation but the Conference Secretariat must be notified in writing via email. Please note that any transferred member registrations must also provide membership details to the Conference Secretariat at time of notification
  • Networking Function - Only three-day IMC registration holders have a ticket to the IMC 2025 Networking Function included. An additional ticket fee is payable by all other registration types.

Expert speakers are invited to submit papers for consideration to present at IMC 2025, contributing to a program that showcases leading research, innovation and thought leadership in naval architecture, marine engineering and maritime technology.

Successful presenters are reminded that they must complete a presenter registration to attend.

The IMC 2023 conference brought together leading experts to explore cutting-edge developments in naval technology, including nuclear-powered submarines, autonomous vehicles, and advanced shipbuilding techniques.

Keynote speakers and panel discussions addressed vital topics such as safety, sustainability, and innovation, with a focus on Australia’s sovereign capabilities and the future of maritime defence systems.
