The investment and building of a skilled and motivated workforce,
and the modernization and optimization of modern shipyards, will be critical
elements of Australia’s plans for the construction of technologically advanced
nuclear submarines. With more than 60 years as one of two designers and
builders of nuclear-powered submarines and the sole designer, builder of
nuclear-powered aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy, HII is a leader in the
development and sustainment of a skilled shipyard workforce and the successful
operations of a nuclear shipyard.
This panel -- which will include the President of HII’s Newport News
Shipbuilding division - will explore the:
- Challenges faced in the construction, management, sustainment and
operation of complex nuclear shipbuilding processes.
- Investments required to build and sustain shipbuilding workforce
including apprenticeship programs that include white and blue collar classroom
and hands-on training, continuation training, nuclear initial training and
mandatory re-certification and academic partnerships with colleges and
universities.
- Culture and commitment required to ensure a nuclear submarine program
that protects people and the environment.
- Applying the shipbuilding workforce development model to submarine
maintenance and life cycle support.
